Visiting Stingrays in Grand Cayman Island

Of all the excursions we have taken in the Caribbean, our day at Stingray City in Grand Cayman remains one of the most memorable. There is something surreal about standing waist-deep in crystal-clear Caribbean water while dozens of stingrays glide around you. It was one of those experiences that you know will stay with you long after your vacation ends.

What to Expect at Stingray City

Once you arrive at the sandbar, you'll find yourself surrounded by waist-deep water and dozens of stingrays gliding gracefully around you.

Interactive Encounters: I have to admit, I was a little nervous at first. These are still wild animals, and seeing so many stingrays swimming directly toward us was a little intimidating. But once we got into the water and learned how gentle they were, those nerves quickly disappeared.

The guides made the experience fun and educational. They showed us how to safely hold the food and explained how to interact with the stingrays without harming them. The stingrays were surprisingly comfortable around people and seemed almost eager to visit each person in the water.

Snorkeling Opportunities: The water is so clear that you can easily observe the stingrays and other marine life swimming below. We had the opportunity to touch and feed Stingrays and snorkel the magnificent coral reefs.

Photo Opportunities: Stingray City is one of those places where you will want your camera ready. Many tours offer professional photographers who capture your time in the water, but bringing a waterproof camera is also a great way to capture your own memories. The photos of the stingrays swimming around us are some of our favorite souvenirs from Grand Cayman.

When we visited Grand Cayman, we chose Sun Ray Tours, and it turned out to be one of the best decisions we made. Instead of booking through the cruise line, we booked directly with the tour company and paid $60 per person, which was less than half of what the cruise line was charging for a similar excursion.
