BUDGET ROAD TRIP TIPS

Going on a low-budget road trip can be a fantastic adventure without breaking the bank. Here are some tips to help you plan a budget-friendly road trip:

1. Plan Your Route: Decide on your destinations and map out the most efficient route to minimize unnecessary driving and fuel costs.  I usually use Google maps and drop pins along my stops.

2. Fuel Efficiency: I guess this is obvious but driving a large gas-guzzling truck is going to cost more than a smaller economy car.  We were pretty cramped on our last road trip but we saved a fortune in gas.

3. Budget Accommodation: Consider camping at national parks, using budget motels, or even sleeping in your car if it's legal and safe in the areas you're visiting. We usually alternate staying in cheap hotels and Airbnb's a few nights so we can splurge on a few nights some expensive accommodations.

4. Cook Your Own Meals: Bring along a portable stove, cookware, and non-perishable foods to prepare your meals. This can save you a significant amount on dining out.  My sister and I did this on our three week road trip around Florida and used the money we saved to stay in nicer accommodations.

5. Pack Snacks: This goes along with tip #4  but stock up on snacks, fruits, and granola bars to avoid impulse purchases at convenience stores.  If you are going on a long road trip, you can replenish along the way when you stop for groceries or make a Walmart stop.

6. Use Apps for Discounts: Utilize apps like GasBuddy to find the cheapest gas stations and apps like HotelTonight for last-minute hotel deals.

7. Stay with Friends or Family: If you have friends or family along your route, consider staying with them for a night or two to save on accommodation costs.

8. Explore Free and Low-Cost Attractions: Research and visit free or low-cost attractions such as parks, scenic viewpoints, hiking trails, and historical sites.  State parks usually have cheap entrance fees and are always on list of attractions.

9. Entertainment: Pack books, podcasts, playlists, or download movies and shows in advance to keep yourself entertained without spending money on entertainment during rest stops.

10. Reusable Water Bottles: Bring reusable water bottles to refill instead of buying bottled water along the way.

11. Plan for Car Maintenance: Perform basic car maintenance before your trip to prevent unexpected breakdowns that could lead to costly repairs.

12. Share Costs: If you're traveling with friends or family, consider carpooling to split fuel and accommodation costs.  When traveling with a large group, we try to stay in an Airbnb with several bedrooms which has allowed us to stay in some of the most beautiful places in the world.

14 .Avoid Toll Roads: If possible, plan your route to avoid toll roads to save money on toll fees.  A word of caution, your GPS may direct you to get in particular lanes that is not allowed resulting in a fine.  On our recent trip to Florida, the GPS directed us into a lane multiple times that required a particular pass with a $25 fee attached for each mishap.

15. Flexible Itinerary: Be open to changes in your itinerary. If you discover a more budget-friendly or interesting destination, be willing to adjust your plans.

16. Travel Off-Peak: This has saved me more money than all of the other tips combined.

17. Avoid traveling during peak tourist seasons, as accommodations and attractions tend to be more expensive during those times.

Volcano Bay in the off season is not crowded.

Remember that the key to a successful low-budget road trip is planning ahead and being mindful of your spending. With a bit of preparation and creativity, you can have an amazing adventure without breaking the bank.
