If you're exploring the Florida Keys and looking for a place where you can slow down and enjoy the natural beauty of the islands, Bahia Honda State Park is definitely worth a stop.
Located on Big Pine Key, Bahia Honda is known for its beautiful turquoise water, sandy beaches, tropical scenery and the historic Bahia Honda Rail Bridge. It was one of those places where I could easily see spending much more time than we had.
What I liked most was that it felt like a quieter side of the Florida Keys. Instead of the busy atmosphere you find in some of the more touristy areas, Bahia Honda gives you the opportunity to enjoy the scenery and spend some time outdoors.
Exploring Bahia Honda State Park
The scenery is what immediately stands out at Bahia Honda.
The water was that beautiful shade of blue-green that makes you want to stop and take pictures from every angle. The combination of white sand, palm trees and clear water gives you exactly the tropical Florida Keys setting you would expect.
There are several beach areas throughout the park, including Calusa Beach, Loggerhead Beach and Sandspur Beach. Each offers its own views and atmosphere.
For me, though, the scenery was just as much a part of the experience as the beaches themselves. There was plenty to look at as we explored the park.
The Bahia Honda Rail Bridge
One of the most recognizable features of Bahia Honda State Park is the old railroad bridge.
The Bahia Honda Rail Bridge was originally part of Henry Flagler's Overseas Railroad, which connected the Florida Keys by rail in the early 1900s. Today, the remaining bridge is an important piece of Keys history and one of the park's most recognizable landmarks.
There is a short walk to a viewing area where you can look out over the water and see the bridge from above.
I always enjoy finding places like this when traveling because you're getting more than just a pretty view. There's a little bit of history behind what you're seeing, too.
Beaches and Clear Water
If you're coming to Bahia Honda for the beaches, you won't be disappointed.
The water is clear and inviting, and the beaches are surrounded by the tropical landscape that makes the Florida Keys so special. On a beautiful day, it's easy to understand why Bahia Honda is often mentioned among Florida's best beach destinations.
The calm water also makes the area popular for swimming, snorkeling, kayaking and other water activities.
Even if you're not planning to spend the entire day in the water, I think the beaches are worth taking some time to enjoy. Sometimes the best part of traveling is simply finding a beautiful place to sit and take it all in.
Snorkeling and Water Activities
Bahia Honda is also a popular spot for snorkeling and exploring the water.
Depending on conditions, visitors can see a variety of marine life, including tropical fish and other creatures that live around the Keys. Snorkeling equipment and other rentals are available in the park.
Kayaking, paddleboarding and boating are also popular activities.
I wasn't there to turn the visit into an all-day adventure on the water, but it was easy to see why people come here specifically for those activities.
Walking and Exploring the Park
There's more to Bahia Honda than the beaches.
Walking around the park gives you a chance to see the tropical vegetation and enjoy the scenery from different viewpoints. If you like photography, you'll find plenty of things to photograph—from the water and palm trees to the old railroad bridge.
I enjoyed being able to explore at my own pace without feeling like I had to rush from one attraction to another.
Camping at Bahia Honda State Park
If you want to spend more time here, Bahia Honda also offers camping.
There are tent and RV campsites, including sites with beautiful waterfront surroundings. Staying overnight would give you a completely different experience than simply stopping in for a few hours.
For anyone who really wants to enjoy the Florida Keys outdoors, camping here could be a great way to extend your visit.
