Zarcero, Costa Rica: A Whimsical Town of Topiary Gardens

During one of her visits to Costa Rica, my daughter explored the picturesque town of Zarcero, located in the Central Valley northwest of San José. She shared these photos with me, and this colorful little town immediately caught my attention.

Zarcero is known for its charming church and, especially, the extraordinary topiary garden that sits in front of it.

San Rafael Church

The town's beautiful church is a striking sight, with its cottage-like exterior and colorful interior. Inside, the walls are decorated with religious paintings and elaborate pastel stencil work.

But the real surprise is waiting just outside.

Parque Francisco Alvarado

In front of the church is Zarcero's famous topiary garden, Parque Francisco Alvarado. Sixteen green arches lead visitors into the garden, where carefully trimmed shrubs have been transformed into an amazing collection of shapes and figures.

Animals, dancers, ox carts, dinosaurs, airplanes, helicopters, and other whimsical creations can be found throughout the park. One of the most unusual figures is a topiary depicting Christ carrying a cross.

It is easy to see why this unique garden has become one of Zarcero's most recognizable attractions.

While I wasn't on this particular visit, my daughter captured these photos during her trip, giving me a glimpse of a Costa Rican town I would love to explore myself someday.
