Southern Blue Traveler: Universal’s Volcano Bay: A Tropical Escape in Orlando

On this visit to Orlando, we decided to stay at Cabana Bay again because of its proximity to Volcano Bay. On our last two visits to Orlando, we spent most of our time at Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure. This time, we wanted to slow down a little and spend more time enjoying Volcano Bay.

Welcome to Volcano Bay

Universal brought the same attention to detail to Volcano Bay that they did to Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure. From the moment you enter, the goal is to make you feel as though you have stepped into a tropical island paradise.

The centerpiece of the park is the massive volcano, which rises 200 feet above Volcano Bay and is the first thing you see as you make your way through the entrance.

Waturi Beach

Located in front of the volcano, Waturi Beach is filled with comfortable seating and umbrellas. There are also two padded loungers beneath a canopy, complete with a lockbox, which are available for an additional fee.

It is a great place to relax, soak up the tropical atmosphere, and enjoy the view of the volcano.

The Rivers

There are two very different rivers at Volcano Bay.

Kopiko Wai Winding River is the lazy river. It winds through the volcano and features special water effects and nighttime lighting.

TeAwa, the Fearless River, is the complete opposite. This is a high-speed whitewater river, and it was a lot of fun. But be prepared—it is much more powerful than a typical lazy river. Once you get into the water, you cannot simply stand up and walk out. The current really does move you along!

General park amenities

There are several restrooms located throughout the park, along with seating and umbrellas in various areas. Life jacket stands are also conveniently located throughout Volcano Bay.

TapuTapu Virtual Line

When you arrive at the park, you will receive a TapuTapu wearable that allows you to join attraction lines virtually. If you want to get in line for a ride, simply touch your TapuTapu to the totem pole at the attraction. It will notify you when it is time to return.

I really liked this feature because it means you can spend your time enjoying the park instead of standing in a long line.

Fun for Little Ones

For the little swimmers in your life, Volcano Bay has areas designed especially for younger children. River Village features a lazy river, while Tot Tiki Reef offers a splash pad and fun slides.

There is plenty for younger visitors to enjoy without having to tackle the bigger attractions.

Food at Volcano Bay

Don't worry about what you will eat while you're at the park. There are several restaurants throughout Volcano Bay, offering a variety of food choices.

We have tried food at several of the restaurants during our visits, and we have always been pleased with it. So you don't necessarily have to leave the park when you get hungry—you can grab something to eat and get right back to enjoying the water.

A Photographer's Dream

Volcano Bay is a photographer's dream. Not only are there photo opportunities scattered throughout the park, but it is also a wonderful place to capture tropical family photos.

The landscaping is absolutely gorgeous. If you love plants and landscaping, you could easily spend hours exploring the foliage and flowers throughout the park. Even if you're not interested in the water attractions, there are plenty of beautiful details to photograph.
