While my sister and I were traveling through the Texas Hill Country photographing bluebonnets, we happened to meet an employee of the Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA). We asked him if he could recommend a beautiful place to photograph, and he suggested Muleshoe Bend Recreation Area.
We decided to take his advice, and I am so glad we did.
He was right. Muleshoe Bend was exactly the kind of Texas Hill Country scenery we had been hoping to find.
Bluebonnets as Far as We Could See
When we arrived, we were greeted by fields of bluebonnets stretching across the landscape. There were miles of flowers, and we were certainly not the only photographers who had come to enjoy them.
It was one of those places where you could easily spend hours simply walking around, looking for the perfect photograph.
The Texas Hill Country is beautiful on its own, but seeing it covered in spring wildflowers made the scenery even more spectacular.
An Unexpected Photo Opportunity
While we were photographing the wildflowers, we noticed two women riding horses nearby. We struck up a conversation with them, and they were kind enough to let us take some photographs of them with the horses.
What started as a simple day of photographing bluebonnets suddenly turned into an unexpected photo shoot.
Looking at some of these photographs, you might think the horse portraits had been planned in advance. They had not!
We had so much fun joining in and capturing these photographs. It was one of those unexpected moments that made the trip even more memorable.
More Than Bluebonnets
Although the bluebonnets were the reason we visited, Muleshoe Bend Recreation Area is much more than a spring wildflower destination.
The park sits along Lake Travis and offers opportunities for hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, fishing, swimming, picnicking, and camping. There is also a boat ramp for those wanting to enjoy the lake.
For us, the wildflowers were the main attraction, but the beautiful Hill Country scenery made the entire visit worthwhile.

Muleshoe Bend Recreation Area is operated by the Lower Colorado River Authority and is open daily from sunrise to sunset.
Current admission is $5 for adults, while children 12 and under are free. Seniors, military members, and disabled visitors receive a reduced admission price. The park also offers camping, trails, restrooms, showers, picnic areas, and other recreational amenities.
Because park fees, hours, and amenities can change, I recommend checking the official LCRA Parks website before your visit.
If You Visit During Bluebonnet Season
If you are visiting Muleshoe Bend specifically to photograph the bluebonnets, give yourself plenty of time to explore. The fields can be beautiful in every direction, and you will probably find yourself stopping frequently for photographs.
Spring wildflowers are seasonal, so the timing of your visit can make a big difference. I would check current bloom conditions before making a special trip.
And while it can be tempting to walk straight into a field of flowers for the perfect picture, be mindful of the wildflowers and stay in areas where visitors are permitted.
Bring water, wear comfortable shoes, and do not forget your camera. You will want it!
Would I Recommend Muleshoe Bend?
Absolutely.
Muleshoe Bend was a perfect recommendation from someone who knew the area well. We went looking for bluebonnets and beautiful scenery, but we ended up with something even better—a fun, unexpected experience photographing two women on horseback.
That is one of the things I love about traveling. Sometimes the places you discover by chance, or because someone local points you in the right direction, become some of your favorite memories.
If you are traveling through the Texas Hill Country during wildflower season, I would definitely put Muleshoe Bend Recreation Area on your list.
And if you happen to meet a couple of horseback riders willing to pose for photographs, consider yourself lucky!
