I had the opportunity to visit Fossil Rim Wildlife Center in Glen Rose, Texas for the first time. Fossil Rim is a sanctuary for endangered species whose goal it is to promote the preservation and procreation for threatened/endangered species, environmental awareness, and a recreational and educational experience for everyone.
The day we were there, we saw vehicles filled with children and cars filled with photographers, like us, with heads and arms stuck out of various windows. There was a sun roof in our vehicle so you would have seen nothing but legs in our vehicle with our upper torsos sticking above the vehicle. I snapped this pic of someone else doing the same thing we were. You are not allowed to get out of your vehicles so this is about the only way to get a clear shot of the animals.
When you go into the visitor center to pay your admission, you will receive an identification guide for the animals, which tells you if they are endangered – along with some interesting facts about each species.

THINGS TO KNOW
- ABSOLUTELY NO PETS ALLOWED! You can not even leave them in your vehicle in the parking lot but there are veterinarians in the Glen Rose area that offer boarding services, You can call the parks office number for more information.
- There are no restrooms until you are halfway through the 9½ mile Scenic Drive so plan accordingly. At this high point, there is an Overlook area. Here you will find a Nature Store, Café, Children’s Animal Center and hiking trails. Spend some time here to stretch your legs and be sure to take in the stunning view from the Café deck or stop a minute for lunch. Pick up a few souvenirs at our Nature Store. Picnic tables located near the Children’s Animal Center are available for a family picnic if you’ve brought your meal, or our Overlook Café has a nice selection of salads, sandwiches, snacks, and drinks.
