Hollow Rock Beach – Minnesota’s North Shore (Grand Portage)

There are so many beautiful beaches to discover along Minnesota’s North Shore, and Hollow Rock Beach is one of those places that is easy to miss if you don’t know where to look.

Located along Highway 61, just 10 miles from the Canadian border, Hollow Rock is a quiet little cove with beautiful views of Lake Superior and its namesake rock formation.

The best way to access the beach is through Hollow Rock Resort, a cozy retreat that looks like a wonderful place to get away from it all. We didn’t stay at the resort, but it looks like a perfect spot to relax, fish, hike, or simply sit back with a good book and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

The beach itself is public, so you don’t have to be a guest at the resort to visit. Once you arrive, don’t stop with photographing Hollow Rock. Take some time to walk around the cove to the left of the rock. There are beautiful views in both directions, and the rocky shoreline makes for some great photo opportunities.

We spent some time exploring the beach and taking in the scenery, and it quickly became one of those unexpected little stops that made our drive along the North Shore even more enjoyable.

Directions

Hollow Rock Resort is located at 7422 East Highway 61, approximately 10 miles from the Canadian border, 3 miles from Grand Portage Lodge & Casino, and about 35 miles east of Grand Marais.

Once you enter the resort, simply follow the main driveway. It will take you all the way to the beach. Hollow Rock will be on your left when you reach the shoreline.

Tip: If you’re traveling the North Shore, add Hollow Rock Beach to your list of places to explore. It’s a peaceful stop with beautiful Lake Superior scenery and doesn’t require a long hike to reach the water.
