Sagrada Família: Seeing Gaudí’s Masterpiece in Barcelona

The Sagrada Família is one of the most famous landmarks in Barcelona, and seeing it in person is an experience you won't soon forget. Designed by the famous Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí, this enormous basilica is unlike anything else you'll see in the city.

Construction began in 1882, with Gaudí becoming involved with the project in 1883. He devoted much of the later part of his life to the project, and the Sagrada Família continued to evolve long after his death. Even today, it remains one of Barcelona's most recognizable landmarks.

Even before you get close to the Sagrada Família, you can see why it attracts so many visitors. The towers rise dramatically above the surrounding city, and the closer you get, the more details you begin to notice.

Gaudí's architecture is filled with unusual shapes, intricate details, and religious symbolism. There is so much going on that you could probably stand in front of the building for quite a while and still discover something you hadn't noticed before.

It is no wonder that the Sagrada Família is one of Barcelona's most visited attractions. It is also one of the best-known examples of Gaudí's work, along with Park Güell.

If you've visited other Gaudí sites around Barcelona, you'll start to recognize some of the same creativity and distinctive style. But the Sagrada Família has a presence all its own.

Seeing the Sagrada Família From the Outside

Unfortunately, we hadn't planned ahead enough to visit the inside during this trip.

Rather than spend a large part of our day waiting to get in, we decided to continue exploring Barcelona and enjoy the Sagrada Família from the outside. At the time, that seemed like the best choice for us, especially since there was still so much of the city we wanted to see.

And honestly, there is plenty to see without stepping inside.

Walking around the exterior gives you the opportunity to take your time looking at the façades, towers, sculptures, and countless architectural details. Every side of the building has something different to look at.

One of the things I enjoy most about visiting places like this is realizing just how much work went into creating them. The Sagrada Família isn't the kind of attraction you simply look at once and move on from. The longer you look, the more details you notice.

The building also looks completely different depending on where you are standing. Moving around the outside gives you different views of the towers.

Plan Ahead If You Want to Go Inside

If seeing the inside of the Sagrada Família is on your Barcelona bucket list, don't make the mistake we did and leave it until the last minute.

Tickets are best purchased in advance through the official Sagrada Família website. Popular days and times can sell out, particularly during busy travel seasons.

There are also guided tours available if you would like to learn more about Gaudí, the history of the basilica, and the symbolism found throughout the building. If you decide to take a tour, be sure to check what is included and read recent reviews before booking.

Even if you don't have time to go inside, I would still make an effort to see the Sagrada Família while you're in Barcelona. It is one of those landmarks that is impressive simply to stand in front of.

Getting to the Sagrada Família

Barcelona is a very easy city to explore without a car. During our visits, I found the Bus Turístic to be one of the easiest ways for me to get around. As a country girl from a small town in Arkansas, I have to admit that a sightseeing bus makes navigating a big city much less intimidating!

The tourist bus stops at many of Barcelona's major attractions, making it a convenient option if you're planning to visit several sights in one day.

You can also reach the Sagrada Família by Barcelona's metro and bus system, take a taxi, or walk from other areas of the city. The Sagrada Família metro station is particularly convenient if you're using public transportation.

If visiting the inside of the Sagrada Família is important to you, plan ahead and purchase your tickets in advance. Check the official website for current ticket options, opening hours, and availability before your visit.

TAKE YOUR TIME OUTSIDE

Even if you don't go inside, allow yourself some time to walk around the basilica. There are details everywhere, and the different façades offer completely different views.

GETTING AROUND BARCELONA

The Sagrada Família is easy to reach by public transportation, including the metro and city buses. The Bus Turístic is another convenient option if you're planning to visit several of Barcelona's major attractions.

Barcelona is also a very walkable city in many areas, so don't be afraid to explore on foot when you have the time.
