If you're looking for a place where beautiful beaches and Florida's natural landscape come together, St. Andrews State Park in Panama City Beach is worth a visit. Located along the Gulf Coast, the park offers a wonderful mix of white sandy beaches, coastal dunes, wetlands, and wildlife.
During our visit, we enjoyed exploring the park and taking in the scenery. While the beach is certainly one of the highlights, I found the natural areas and wildlife just as interesting.
Exploring St. Andrews State Park
St. Andrews State Park covers more than 1,200 acres on a peninsula extending into the Gulf of Mexico. The park's landscape includes sandy beaches, dunes, pine woods, marshes, and waterways.
One of the things I enjoyed about St. Andrews was how quickly the scenery changed as we explored. One minute you're looking out across the Gulf, and the next you're surrounded by the quieter natural areas of the park.
It is an easy place to slow down and enjoy the outdoors without having to travel far from the Panama City Beach area.
Beautiful Gulf Coast Beaches
The beaches at St. Andrews State Park are exactly what you might expect from Florida's Gulf Coast—soft white sand, clear water, and beautiful views.
The park provides a quieter alternative to some of the busier areas of Panama City Beach. It's a great place to spend some time walking along the shore, enjoying the scenery, or simply sitting and watching the water.
For anyone who enjoys photographing beaches and coastal scenery, there are plenty of opportunities to capture the beauty of this part of Florida.
Wildlife Watching in the Marsh
One of the more memorable parts of our visit was seeing people gathered around the marsh area with some very impressive cameras.
Several photographers had set up in hopes of capturing pictures of the birds and other wildlife that frequent the area. They were obviously serious about their photography, and their enormous camera lenses made it clear that they knew this was a good place to wait for the perfect shot.
Wildlife watching adds another dimension to a visit to St. Andrews State Park. Instead of simply coming for the beach, you can spend time looking for birds and other animals in the park's natural habitats.
And yes, alligators can be found in the park's freshwater areas, so keep a respectful distance and follow all posted park guidelines when viewing wildlife.
A Photographer's Paradise
You don't have to be a professional photographer to appreciate St. Andrews State Park.
Between the Gulf beaches, dunes, marshes, birds, and changing light throughout the day, there are plenty of subjects to photograph. The contrast between the bright blue water and the quieter wetlands also gives you completely different scenery within the same park.
Even if you leave your big camera at home, it's the kind of place where you'll probably find yourself reaching for your phone to take another picture.

There is more to St. Andrews than simply relaxing on the beach. Depending on the season and conditions, visitors can enjoy a variety of outdoor activities, including:

Our Visit to St. Andrews State Park
St. Andrews State Park was a nice reminder that there's more to Panama City Beach than just the beach itself.
We enjoyed the beautiful Gulf Coast scenery, but the wildlife and natural areas gave us something different to experience. Seeing photographers patiently waiting around the marsh for the perfect bird or wildlife shot was one of those little moments that made the visit more memorable.
