Ponce de Leon Springs State Park was another stop on our trip exploring the freshwater springs of Northwest Florida. Located in the small town of Ponce de Leon in the Florida Panhandle, this spring is easy to visit and makes a great addition to a Northwest Florida springs road trip.
Compared with some of the more natural, undeveloped springs we visited, Ponce de Leon Springs has a more traditional state park feel. The main spring is easily accessible, with a developed swimming area, picnic facilities and short nature trails.
The Main Spring
The first thing you'll notice is the beautiful clear water. The main spring is formed where two underground water flows converge, producing approximately 14 million gallons of water every day.
The water stays at a chilly 68 degrees year-round, so even on a hot Florida day, stepping into it can be quite a shock!
The spring water flows into a roughly 350-foot spring run before meeting the darker, tea-colored water of Sandy Creek. The contrast between Florida's clear spring water and its naturally tannin-stained creek water is especially interesting to see.
Swimming at Ponce de Leon Springs
Swimming is one of the main reasons people visit the park. The designated swimming area gives you a chance to get right into that incredibly clear 68-degree water.
There are changing facilities and restrooms nearby, making this one of the easier springs to visit if swimming is part of your plans. Snorkeling is also permitted in designated areas.
We visited while exploring several springs in this part of Florida, so Ponce de Leon Springs worked well as one stop on a larger spring-hopping trip.
Take a Walk Beyond the Spring
If you have time, don't leave immediately after seeing the main spring.
The park has two short nature trails — Spring Run Trail and Sandy Creek Trail. Both travel through the shady hardwood forest surrounding the spring run and Sandy Creek.
They're an easy way to see another side of the park away from the swimming area, and the trails are also good places to look for birds and other wildlife.

Hours: 8:00 a.m. until sunset, 365 days a year.
Entrance fee: $4 per vehicle for up to eight people. Pedestrians and bicyclists are $2.
Water temperature: A constant 68°F year-round.
Swimming: Swimming and snorkeling are available in designated areas.
Facilities: Restrooms, changing facilities, picnic tables, grills and picnic pavilions are available.
Trails: Spring Run and Sandy Creek are the park's two short nature trails.
Other activities: Fishing, birding, wildlife viewing and picnicking are also available.
Busy days: The park can reach capacity during periods of high visitation and temporarily close to additional visitors, so arriving early is a good idea during busy summer days and weekends.
