My daughter and I were really excited about visiting Barbados. I mean, it's Barbados....the water is a beautiful turquoise and the sand is a brilliant white.
Walk from the ship to the port area |
Our ship docked at the Bridgetown Cruise Terminal, about a mile from downtown Bridgetown. Once through the port terminal, we located the taxis. We were still excited about the tour of Antigua the day before and couldn't wait to explore this island. We we asked about the cost, were quoted a price of $260! Seriously? It was only $20 in Antigua for the entire day.
As I have mentioned in other posts, Taxi fares are usually regulated and there is a sign with the price of a taxi ride from the port to various places of interest. The $260 price should have been around $50 which they did come back later and offer us as we walked away.
By this time, we had decided to walk to Carlisle Bay. There was several people heading that direction so we joined the crowd. According to google maps, it is a 1.6 mile walk but you could easily take a taxi for $5 if you don't want to walk.
We were in Barbados on May 2 and it was HOT. Like August in Arkansas hot. Keep that in mind if you decide to walk around Bridgetown and take some water with you.
There is a concrete walkway from the port to town. If you walk along the beach, there is a little shade and places to rest or take photographs.
Once you get into town, there will be very little shade.
The water front in Bridgetown is beautiful. If you stay near the water on your walk, you will arrive at this beautiful walkway.
Historic Bridgetown and the Garrison areas are listed on the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation's (UNESCO) World Heritage List.
You may even see mounted police, some of who will blow you a kiss.
After the boardwalk ends, you will want to turn right and walk under this bridge to get to the beach.
There is also a place to get food and drinks after your long walk.
Once you cross under the bridge, to your left, you will see this fountain and some benches under some trees where you can rest and enjoy the view.
If you continue to walk straight under the bridge, you will see several buildings and behind those buildings is one of the most beautiful beaches you will ever see.
See, I told you it was beautiful. The photo above has a color cast to it but the sand is white. Like a glaring-blinding white so make sure you have your sunglasses with you.
There are several restaurants and activities along the beach.
If you are tired of the beach and headed back to the ship, take time to visit the parliament buildings. There are also several stores if you want to do some shopping.
I love the color of this buildings. You will see it on the way into town.
TO KNOWAs I mentioned above, be aware of the charges for a taxi. There is a large sign posted so be sure to see what you should be paying. This was the only island where they tried to rip us off. Not all drivers will do this but some will.
Carlisle Beach is beautiful so if you are looking to save some money, walk to taxi a $5 taxi there.
CURRENCYThe currency of Barbados is the Barbados Dollar (BBD) but they will accept US dollars.
LANGUAGE
The official Barbados language is English, however you will hear our local dialect - referred to as Bajan dialect - spoken as well.
WHAT I WOULD DO DIFFERENTLY
I would not do anything differently if this was my first time to visit. If I return, I will take a tour of the island.
