One of the first things you quickly learn about Valletta is that this beautiful little city is not flat. There are hills, stairs, and plenty of walking, so when I discovered the Barrakka Panoramic Lift, I knew I wanted to give my legs a break.
The Barrakka Panoramic Lifts are built into the ditch beneath Valletta’s fortifications. They connect Lascaris Wharf at the Grand Harbour with the Upper Barrakka Gardens and the streets of Valletta above.
I have not traveled extensively compared with some people, but for an old girl from a small town in Arkansas, I have managed to make it to 29 countries in the last five years.
And if there is one thing my travels have taught me, it is that it is never too late to get out and see the world.
Perched on a small peninsula overlooking Malta’s beautiful Grand Harbour, Valletta is one of those cities where history seems to be everywhere you look.
Built by the Knights of St. John beginning in the 16th century, Valletta is filled with honey-colored stone buildings, steep streets, ornate balconies, churches, fortifications and incredible views of the harbor below. The historic city is compact enough to explore on foot, which is exactly what we did.
