If you're looking for a Florida getaway that feels a little different from the usual beach day, Peanut Island Park is worth putting on your list.
Located in the Intracoastal Waterway near the Lake Worth Inlet in Riviera Beach, Florida, this unique island combines beaches, beautiful water, outdoor activities and an interesting piece of South Florida history. And because you can only reach the island by boat, getting there is part of the adventure.
Peanut Island is approximately 80 acres and is surrounded by the waters of the Lake Worth Lagoon and Intracoastal Waterway. It may be close to the busy Palm Beach area, but once you're out on the island, it can feel surprisingly removed from everything.
One of the fun things about visiting Peanut Island is that you can't simply drive there. The island is boat access only, so you'll need to arrive by your own boat, water taxi or shuttle service.
Several independent water taxi companies operate in the area and provide transportation to the island. Palm Beach County currently lists Peanut Island Shuttle Boat and Palm Beach Water Taxi among the available services.
A Little Peanut Island History
Peanut Island has a fascinating history that isn't immediately obvious when you're walking along its beaches.
The island was originally created in 1918 from material dredged while creating the Lake Worth Inlet. It was initially only about 10 acres, but continued dredging over the years gradually expanded the island to its current size.
And yes, there is a story behind the name.
The island was eventually given the name Peanut Island after plans were made to use it as a terminal for shipping peanut oil. Those plans were abandoned in 1946, but the name stuck.
The Kennedy Bunker
One of Peanut Island's most unusual historical features is the John F. Kennedy Bunker, which was built in 1961 during the Cold War.
The bunker was constructed as a potential emergency shelter for President John F. Kennedy during his time in nearby Palm Beach. It has become one of the island's best-known historical features.
However, there's an important update for anyone planning a visit: the Kennedy Bunker is currently closed to the public until further notice. Palm Beach County has been working on restoration and improvements to the historic area.
So while you can enjoy Peanut Island itself, don't plan your visit around touring the bunker.
Things to Do on Peanut Island
For such a small island, there is actually quite a bit to do here.
Peanut Island is a popular spot for swimming, snorkeling, fishing, kayaking, picnicking and simply enjoying the scenery.
Swim and Snorkel
The island has designated swimming areas as well as a snorkeling lagoon. The snorkeling lagoon provides an opportunity to see shallow-water marine life and has a floating swim platform.
Swimming conditions and lifeguard coverage can vary, so it's a good idea to check current conditions before heading into the water.

Go Fishing
If fishing is more your style, Peanut Island has a fishing pier on the northeast side of the island.
Saltwater fishing is permitted in designated areas, and the fishing pier is open around the clock. Just be aware that fishing isn't permitted in designated swimming areas or from the docks, boardwalks and observation areas.
Kayak or Paddle
The surrounding water makes Peanut Island a popular destination for kayaking and other non-motorized water activities.
If you're bringing your own kayak or paddleboard, the island provides access for launching. The surrounding Intracoastal scenery also makes getting out on the water a great way to experience the area.
Have a Picnic
Peanut Island is also a good place to slow down and have lunch by the water.
There are picnic areas and grills available, although there is no food concession or restaurant on the island. You'll need to bring whatever food and drinks you want for the day.
If you're planning a longer visit, especially with kids, I'd definitely pack a cooler with plenty of food and drinks.
What to Know Before You Visit
Peanut Island is beautiful, but it's important to remember that this isn't a typical beach park where you can simply pull into a parking lot and grab something from a concession stand.
Because you're arriving by boat, you'll want to plan ahead.
There Is No Food Service
There are no restaurants, snack bars or rental concessions on the island. Bring your own food, snacks and beverages. Water fountains are available near the restrooms.
Bring Sun Protection
There's plenty of opportunity to enjoy the Florida sunshine, so don't forget sunscreen, sunglasses, hats and water.
Grills Are Available
Small barbecue grills are permitted in designated areas, making the island an option for a fun picnic or cookout. Open fires are not permitted.
Pets Are Allowed in Designated Areas
Dogs and other domesticated animals are permitted in designated areas, but pets must remain on a leash no longer than six feet. Owners are also responsible for cleaning up after their pets.
Leave the Balloons at Home
One rule you might not expect is that balloons are prohibited at Peanut Island. The county has this restriction in place in part because of concerns about marine wildlife and sea turtles.
