HIGHTOWER SPRINGS, FLORIDA

Each time we visit Florida, we make it a point to explore as many springs as possible. On our most recent trip, we had the chance to visit Hightower Springs, Ponce de Leon, Pitt & Silvan, and Morrison Springs. While Hightower was likely the smallest of the bunch and we didn’t stay long, it was still a stunning spot. Even in February, the beauty of the place was undeniable, and it was definitely worth the stop.

What to Expect at Hightower Springs

The springs are a hidden gem, offering clear, cool waters that stay at a constant temperature year-round. The spring itself is surrounded by lush foliage, including towering cypress trees and a variety of native plants. We were there in February so though there was very little foliage on the trees, it was still beautiful.

Activities to Enjoy:

  • Swimming: The waters are perfect for a refreshing swim, with crystal-clear visibility and temperatures that stay around 72°F year-round.
  • Kayaking and Canoeing: Bring your kayak or rent one nearby to explore the spring and its surrounding waterways. The spring feeds into the Withlacoochee River, providing opportunities for leisurely paddling.
  • Wildlife Viewing: With abundant wildlife in the area, Hightower Springs is a fantastic spot for birdwatching and nature photography. Keep an eye out for the local fauna as you explore.

How to Get There

Hightower Springs is located about 10 miles south of Ocala, in central Florida. While the location offers seclusion, it is still fairly accessible by car.
