DISCOVERING WAKULLA SPRINGS STATE PARK

Tucked away in the heart of Florida’s panhandle, Wakulla Springs State Park is a destination that truly embodies the phrase “hidden gem.” With its crystal-clear waters, ancient cypress trees, and an abundance of wildlife, this park offers a unique blend of adventure, relaxation, and a glimpse into Florida's natural beauty.

A Step Back in Time

As you enter Wakulla Springs, it feels like stepping back into a time before Florida was bustling with tourists and theme parks. The park is home to one of the largest and deepest freshwater springs in the world, and its waters have been drawing visitors for centuries. The park’s centerpiece, Edward Ball Wakulla Springs Lodge, was built in the 1930s and exudes Old Florida charm. The lodge’s grand architecture and antique furnishings make it easy to imagine the days when this was a playground for the rich and famous.  The whole time I was there, I couldn't help but picture scenes from The Shining. That was the vibe the place gave me.

A Spring Like No Other

The spring itself is the park’s crown jewel. Its crystal-clear waters are so transparent that you can see down to the very bottom, even at depths of over 100 feet. Swimming here is an experience like no other—Don’t be startled if you find yourself sharing the water with alligators. On warm days, the spring provides a refreshing escape, with water temperatures hovering around 70°F year-round.  

Wildlife Wonderland

Wakulla Springs is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts. The park is teeming with an array of creatures, from playful river otters and curious manatees to alligators sunning themselves along the banks. Birdwatchers will be in their element here, with the chance to spot majestic egrets, herons, and even the occasional bald eagle.

The best way to experience the park’s wildlife is by taking one of the iconic glass-bottom boat tours. As the boat glides over the spring, the clear waters below reveal an underwater world of fish, turtles, and ancient limestone formations. Your guide will share fascinating stories and facts about the area’s history, geology, and wildlife, making this a must-do activity during your visit.

A Taste of Florida History

Beyond its natural beauty, Wakulla Springs has a rich history waiting to be discovered. The park has been a popular filming location for classic Hollywood movies, including Tarzan and Creature from the Black Lagoon. The lodge’s dining room, with its original cypress wood paneling and vintage decor, serves up Southern classics like fried catfish and key lime pie, offering a taste of Florida’s culinary heritage.
